What is SPRYE's Mission?

SPRYE is a membership-based organization for adults 60 years and older who want to live confidently at home in the community they love.

Is SPRYE unique?

SPRYE is one of a growing number of independent non-profit organizations formed in recent years around the country as part of an “Aging In Place” (AIP) movement, otherwise known as the Village movement. Similar AIP Organizations exist in the communities of Bronxville, Greenwich, Larchmont/Mamaroneck, New Canaan, New Rochelle, Somers, Tarrytown, White Plains and Yonkers. 

What is the legal and tax status of SPRYE?

SPRYE is a charitable corporation organized under New York State Law. Its tax exempt status as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service, which has also determined that donations to SPRYE are deductible under applicable sections of the Internal Revenue Code.

How does SPRYE operate?

Help and information is only a phone call away. Potential members can contact the office for details, which can be given over the phone, be distributed by email or snail mail, or if requested, the Executive Director can make a home visit to explain SPRYE’s services and benefits.  SPRYE’s office is located at 55 S. Main St., One Gateway Plaza, 3rd floor, Port Chester, N.Y. 10573. Executive Director Marie Johnson oversees day to day operations assisted by administrative assistant Margie McCabe and volunteers who help in the office, fielding calls and assisting with administrative tasks.

Who is eligible for membership in SPRYE?

Anyone 60+ who lives in one of the SPRYE communities can become a member. The annual membership fee is currently  $375 for individuals and $500 for households. Reduced membership rates are available for those who qualify on the basis of financial need.

What services and programs does SPRYE provide to members?

Based on our surveys and experience of other AIP organizations, the service most needed by members is transportation for medical appointments, shopping, and other needs. Numerous other valuable benefits include referrals to well-screened home maintenance,handyman and other professional service providers for personal living and health needs. SPRYE also offers a calendar of regularly scheduled social, educational and cultural activities.

What role do volunteers play?

Volunteers play a vital role in the success of SPRYE. Whether or not they are members, volunteers of all ages are needed to help staff the office, provide much of the transportation and assist with other services and programs.

What are SPRYE's fund raising needs?

Other nearby AIP organizations have found that in the early stages member fees may generate 40% or less of the operating expenses(mainly personnel and administrative) so the balance must be obtained through contributions and grants. The fund-raising results to date clearly indicate there is strong support for SPRYE within its communities.
