Under SPRYE’s umbrella of services, remaining independent and engaged in a familiar community and neighborhood is a very real option.

This is the most-frequently mentioned issue in our surveys and focus groups. On average, a woman outlives her driver’s license by ten years and a man by six. To meet this need, rides to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other critical errands are provided by carefully screened volunteer drivers who have been trained for that purpose and who are available to accompany the passenger into their destination if desired.

Social and Cultural Programs

Regularly scheduled social, cultural, and educational events are available each month.  Activities may include guided museum tours, concerts and other performing arts events, lectures, health and wellness workshops, restaurant visits, and in-home social occasions like barbecues and pot-luck suppers.

Home Assistance

A wide variety of in-home support is provided, among them:

  • Referrals to SPRYE-approved home health care providers
  • Referrals to vetted providers of in-home emergency-alert devices and services
  • Volunteer-provided handyman assistance with simple household repairs
  • Safety assessments to make sure your home is age-friendly
  • Referrals to pre-screened modification and repair contractors
  • Assistance in placing orders for home delivery and prepared meals.

Patient Advocacy

Trained volunteers are available to accompany members to medical appointments and procedures. If desired, they can act as a patient’s second set of “eyes and ears” in order to help the patient to correctly follow up their clinicians’ instructions. Hospitalized members can receive help to assure that their discharge plan a) is workable, and b) that the necessary resources are lined up so that the patient will make a successful recovery.

Professional Referrals

SPRYE provides referrals to vetted professionals in the fields of elder law, financial planning, and other areas of interest to seniors.

Technology Assistance

Volunteers can help solve the mysteries of personal computers, mobile phones and other hi-tech devices. Referrals are provided for problems requiring professional intervention. SPRYE also tracks developments in the rapidly-growing area of in-home assisted living technology and will report to members periodically.
